The department of Loire is a French department that lies in the region of Rhone-alps. It is bordered on all sides by the departments of Rhone, ardeche, Haute-Loire and saone-et-Loire. Like many departments in the region it is so named because of the river that stretches across the department, the Loire that is a tributary of the Rhone.

It stretches from the Urbise in the north in the township of Pacaudière to the Saint-Sauveur-en-Street near Bourg-Argental
Thought the department is long, its width is comparatively just a trifle. It was created from the department of Rhone-Loire and Loire during the French revolution of 1790.

The department is known for its rich natural landscapes and wealth, being a home to major environments. Important places and must see points in the regions that one cannot miss are the mountains, plateaus, plains, river gorges and valleys.

Connecting the Auvergne and Rhone-alps are the mountains of Drill. The monts du Lyonnais lies on the eastern boundary along the Rhone and the Soane. The Pilat are the massive forests that abound with vineyards and trees of most different and rare varieties. The plains of Forez are crisscrossed by the Loire and Roanne Basin is the transit territory towards the north. Its wonderful feature is its evening splendor. The valleys of Ondaine and Gier offer some truly spectacular views to the tourist.
