Isere is a department in France that dates back to historic times as the valley if “iser” or iron ore that was abundant along the tributary Isere, that of the Rhone river.

Created in 1790 as part of the French revolution from the erstwhile province of Dauphine, it shares it s borders with Rhone, Loire and Ardeche.  The language was Dauphinois at the beginning of thirteenth century.

Some of the interests of the department are the hard, cold limestone plateaus that dot the department, the Bievre plains, the Chambarans, the Rhone valley it shares with Massif Central, the mass of chartreuse, the alphine path connecting to chambery etc ...

Though known for its countryside, it now resembles growing urbanization because of the exploitation of white coal leading to industrial activities.

Major cities are Grenoble, Echirolles,  Saint-Martin-d’Hyeres, Vienna, Fountain and Bourgoin-Jallieu.

It’s famous for mountains and invariably many ski resorts have sprung up around the general area.
The prominent among them are the Val d'Isere, the Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Alpe d'Huez is one of the main mountains of tour De France.
Lumbin, the city of paragliding hosts Coupe Icare, the annual festival of Paragliding held symbolically in the early autumn. It also hosts hang gliding, acrobatics and air Balloons.
